Marian Elizabeth (Erickson) Fladeboe, 98, passed away at Heritage Manor of Park Rapids, Minnesota, on November 27 after a brief illness. A memorial service will be scheduled in the spring.
A life-long resident of Kandiyohi County, Marian (Minnie) was born April 15, 1921, to Edner Erickson and Alma (Lundin) Erickson, the third of six children. The family resided on a farm near Blomkest, Minnesota. During high school, Marian and her sister Norma shared a rented room in Willmar, Minnesota, so the girls could attend high school; Marian graduated in 1939. After a brief secretarial course, she worked at the Rural Electric Association (REA) office.
Minnie married Melvin Fladeboe in 1944 in the Svea parsonage while Mel was home on leave from the air force in WWII. Together, Minnie and Mel lived and worked in Willmar. In addition to working for the REA, after marrying Mel, Minnie also worked as a server at the Fireside Inn restaurant and as a secretary for Equifax.
She enjoyed painting water colors, sewing and handwork, playing piano, and watching Masterpiece Theater. She valued simple pleasures: pie on Friday, wind in the trees, and laughter with family.
Marian is survived by her three children, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren: Gene and his wife Julie (Jensen) of Park Rapids; Gerald and his wife Nancy (Dwyer) of Spicer and their boys Martin, married to Heidi (Carlson) (children Elise and Jack), and Steve, married to Megan (Geer) (children Brooklyn and Jacob); and Karen and husband Dean Erickson of Spicer, and their children Matthew, married to Angela Ricaurte, (daughter Juli), Nathan, and Elizabeth, married to David Monson. She was preceded in death by husband Mel and sisters Lorraine Gray, Norma Nelsen, Mona Chalberg, and brothers Waldo Erickson and Rayburn Erickson.
Minnie usually greeted her grandchildren with the phrase, “Shalom, that means peace.” We hope she has found it.
