Jean Lathrop Leckner gracefully passed away at her daughter’s home in Davenport, ND under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley on October 17th, 2019 at the age of 94, but one would never guess with her sharp mind, beauty and resolve.
Jean M. Lathrop was born on December 16, 1924 in Mpls. MN the daughter of Wellington “Duke” and Marguerite (Finger) Lathrop. She grew up in Mpls, MN, graduating from North High School at the age of 17 at the top of her class. She spent 4 years at the University of Minnesota studying Architecture where once again she excelled. She loved sports, modern dance, and learning. She met the love of her life and best friend, Ralph Leckner, while lifeguarding at Twin Lake Beach. They married on June 20th 1946. After two kids , Walt and Diane, and 12 years of marriage they moved to Moorhead, MN where they had their third child, Cory. Shortly after moving to Moorhead they purchased land on Lower Bottle Lake near Park Rapids, built a cabin by hand , and enjoyed summers there until retiring at age 51 and making it their home and livelihood.
Jean was on the Lake Emma Township Board and served as their treasurer. She loved volunteering at Tamarac Wildlife Refuge and was proud to be one of the volunteers to help release the trumpeter swans in this area.
Jean and Ralph loved to laugh, tell stories, fish, hunt, camp, bird, play bridge, snow-mobile, and golf . Jean loved to entertain family and friends in their home. Jean’s style, creativity and graceful beauty shined not only in her smile, but in everything she did, as did her strength, kindness, wit and intelligence. She adored her parents and grandparents and loved to reminisce about her experiences growing up, trips to Lake Julia, baseball games and friendships she had, Jean was a voracious reader, knew something about everything and had a memory like no other. She loved history, especially the Civil War and Native American History, as well as both World Wars as she took great pride that her father served in both wars.
What Jean (and Ralph) loved most, was their family. Jean is survived by her children, Walt (Linda) Leckner, Diane Larson. and Cory Olson. 9 grandchildren Jim (Emily) Leckner, Patti (Chris) Goodman, Ryan (Jessica) Leckner, Damon (Kristen) Larson, Shelley (Jim) Hubbard, Maddy (Randy) Luke’s, Jake Olson, Alex (Laura) Olson, Christopher Olson, and 20 great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Park Rapids, MN. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the services. Friends may leave online condolences at ceasefuneralhome.com.
