Richard Phillip Wolverton, 94, Park Rapids, MN, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019 in his home. He was born January 28, 1925 to William and Mildred (Schrey) Wolverton in Burlington, Iowa. After graduating from Burlington High School, he attended community college then spent his career working for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and later for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company, retiring in 1985.
On June 11, 1950, he married Shirley Strauss in Burlington, Iowa. They lived in Burlington, IA; Naperville, IL; Maplewood, MN; Fort Worth, TX, and Park Rapids, MN. Richard was a member at Riverside United Methodist Church of Park Rapids.
He was very active. He enjoyed playing sports when he was younger; bowling, golf and baseball, and watching sports when he was older. He really enjoyed playing Bridge. Shirley and he played in tournaments across the country; both earning their Life Masters. Most of all, he enjoyed his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Sue Meartz; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Wolverton; grandchildren, Andrew Meartz, Katherine Bladow, Daniel Wolverton; and 2 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, and son, Steven.
Visitation was 6-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at Cease Family Funeral Home in Park Rapids.
