On Monday, July 22, 2019, Lawrence Oluf (Larry) Swenson, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at Crystal Brook Memory Care in Park Rapids at the age of 80.
Larry was born on September 2, 1938, in Erie, PA. His family moved to Minnesota and eventually settled in Fargo, ND. While attending NDSU, Larry met the former Ruthie Skarsvaag, whom he would marry and share a 60 year love affair, that would see them reside in Aberdeen, Fargo, Huron, Willmar, and finally Park Rapids, MN at Loon’s Reach on Long Lake, their favorite place in the world. Larry is survived by Ruthie, Brothers, Don Handahl (Willmar) and Duane Swenson (Jackson, WI), children Dane (Molly), Kären (Jack Huff) Siwek, and Sara (John) Auran, 10 adoring grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Larry had a passion for family and it was revealed in the countless hours spent with his and Ruthie’s large extended families, with parents Mabel Swenson and John and Ruth Skarsvaag, Ruthie’s sister Marlys and her husband Dave Herstad and finally with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Larry was happiest when he spent time with his family and friends at Loon’s Reach.
Larry enjoyed automobiles, making them his primary career in life first as an award-winning District Manager for Chevrolet, then as a dealer in four locations. He was successful in sales due to his love of people and his ability to always see the best in others. He had a servant’s heart which led him to Rotary first in high school, then as an adult where he was a long-time member, president, and founder of new clubs in Willmar, Litchfield and Hutchinson. His passion helped to inspire John, Kären and Molly to become Rotarians.
Larry was an instrumental team member of the St. Joseph’s Foundation Hospital Board and was an effective fund raiser in Park Rapids.
In his 50’s, Larry discovered golf and soon was playing five days a week (weekends were Ruthie’s!) what a great way, he thought, to spend 4 hours with my friends.
Larry’s best friend and partner in life was Ruthie. They were a team in every sense of the word and loved their life together, perhaps best portrayed by his constant desire for her presence as his memory began to fail him. Having the love of his life nearby brought him the comfort nothing else could.
A Celebration of Larry’s life is planned for 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 28, 2019, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids. Visitation with the family will be at 10:00 AM. Friends may leave online condolences at ceasefuneralhome.com. Arrangements are being handled by Cease Funeral Home of Park Rapids, MN.
