Kurt M. Donnay

“It pains me to admit it, but apparently, I have passed away. Everyone told me it would happen one day but that’s simply not something I wanted to hear, much less experience. Once again I didn’t get things my way!”

Kurt Michael Donnay, age 65, of Park Rapids, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, November 25, 2021, at his home.

Kurt was born July 24, 1956 and was the second of five children born to Frank and Barbara (Holty) Donnay of Park Rapids. He joined the Minnesota Army National Guard in 1974, where he was a light equipment repairman, welder, and auto mechanic. He received an honorable discharge in 1977. He began working at Itasca-Mantrap Electrical Co-op in 1978 as a mechanic. In 1984, he entered the Apprentice Lineman Program and attained he Journeyman Lineman in 1987. In 2007, he was promoted to Lead Lineman. Kurt retired from Itasca-Mantrap as a Senior Lead Journeyman Lineman after nearly 39 years of service, in September 2017.

Kurt raised his 3 children in Park Rapids; 2 of the 3 inherited his quick wit. He enjoyed traveling with his children on school trips when they were younger, mainly to embarrass them. He has enjoyed gallivanting the earth for the past 18 years with his friend and travel companion, Diane Brophy.

Kurt enjoyed beekeeping, which he learned from his father, and passed along the tradition down to his sons.

Kurt was always giving of his time, enjoyed being around people, and making them smile. Kurt was on the Executive Council for the Central Minnesota Council, Boy Scouts of America. Kurt was also a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an active member at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Kurt helped start the Hubbard First Response and Rescue in 1993 and continued to volunteer until his passing. Kurt helped and assisted for so many activities, there are too many to list. Kurt enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with family and friends. He should have been a Hallmark card writer, as he had a joke for every occasion.

Kurt had a vast knowledge of everything and was certain of his answers - just ask him. He took his fashion cues from no one. His signature everyday look was a pocket t-shirt or flannel, a pair of jeans, slip-on shoes, and a baseball or stormy kromer cap. Kurt was a fun-loving, kind, and caring man, and his greatest enjoyment was teasing his children and grandkids. His laugh was infectious and like no other – you definitely knew when Kurt was around.

Kurt was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Barbara, and his step-mother, Mildred (Nevala Peterson) Donnay.

He is survived by his children, Michael P. (Angela) Donnay of Sebeka, MN; Janet L. (David) Soczek of Coon Rapids, MN; and Gentry Allen Donnay of Park Rapids, MN; brothers Steven (Nancy) Donnay of Irvine, CA; and Timothy (Julene) Donnay of Ham Lake, MN; sisters Pamela (Thomas) Coathup, of Hutchinson, MN; and Connie (Michael) Landreville, of Edina, MN; 7 grandchildren, Samantha and Sydney Soczek, Grace, Frank, Abigail, Miles, and Rowan Donnay, 1 great-grandchild, Thaddeus Melo; several beloved nieces, nephews, friends, and his father’s lab, Copper.
