James Benson
James Neil Benson was born November 6, 1935, in Osage, Minne-sota, to Semart & Hilda (Trankner) Benson. Jim was born and raised on a farm in Osage, Minnesota. He was a National Guardsman for two years. Jim met Alyce Faye Johnson at the Dixie Drive Inn in Park Rapids, Minnesota over a chocolate malt. Jim and Alyce were married on August 22, 1955 at the Methodist Church. Jim started his career at Sperry Univac and then on to Control Data. Jim was part of the team that built the first computer for NSA and consultant for Apple. He worked in management all of his career and retired after 30 years. Jim had side jobs including making wear-rods (under the skis) for snowmobiles, repairing radios and televisions and selling snowmobiles. Over the years, Jim and Alyce made their homes in Columbus, GA, Bloomington, Circle Pines, Burnsville, Sykesville, MD, Eagan, Rosemount & his current home in Lakeville.
Dad enjoyed visiting with family, friends, helping others, operating his farm equipment, mowing, plowing snow, playing solitaire and watching shows about Alaska. Following a brief illness, Jim passed away November 2nd, 2020, at the Bloomington Masonic Home at the age of 84.
Survivors include his children, Kim Benson of Osceola, WI, Tawn Benson of York, PA, Jeff (Sharon) Benson of Boise, ID; six grandchildren, Jessica Prow, Tracy Broom, Jason Stone, Stephen Stone, Jenna (Stephen) Vikla and Jarrett Benson; four great-grandchildren, Brandon Mills, Brenna Crow, Anthony Prow and Signe Stone; his sister, Gladys Carlson of Fergus Falls; his brother, Gerald of Fergus Falls; his sister-in-law, Terry Benson of Minneapolis; nieces & nephews, other relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alyce, and brother Tom Benson.
There will be a celebration of life the summer of 2021.
