Calvin K. Johnson

Calvin K. Johnson, 82, of Park Rapids MN, formerly of Mankato MN, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, August 7, 2018, while a patient at St. Joseph's Hospital of Park Rapids. Calvin was 82 years of age.

Calvin, "Cal", was born on the family farm to John Edwin and Martha (Lemke) Johnson in Vail Township near Wabasso MN on March 11, 1936. Following his graduation from Wabasso High School, he attended Mankato State University. Upon graduation there, he expanded his education with an M.S in Chemistry from the University of South Dakota. His academic career began as a professor of chemistry at Bethany Lutheran College of Mankato MN. Eventually he advanced to become Director of Financial Aid and joined as an active member and officer with the Minnesota Association of Financial Aid Administrators (MAFAA).

On June 8, 1958 Cal had joined in marriage with Darlene L. Marquardt. The couple had five children, Christine Fay, Elizabeth Desiree, Timothy Calvin, Peter Lee, and John Lester. Upon the passing of his beloved wife, Darlene, in 1990, Cal continued with Bethany Lutheran College until his retirement in 2001. He then moved to the home they had built on 3rd Crow Wing Lake. For those retirement years Cal enjoyed the fishing, hunting and golfing opportunity of the area. He was an active member of the First English Lutheran Church of Dorset MN. He was dearly loved by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who will miss him terribly.

Cal is survived by his sister, Mayvis Sickman of Granite Falls MN; his five children (and spouses), Christine (John) Schaffer, Plano TX; Elizabeth (Jay), Brookings SD; Timothy (Jennifer), Indianapolis IN; Peter (Susan), Indianapolis IN; and John, Park Rapids MN; and by nine grandchildren - Jason, Tara, Amanda, Andrew, Alex, Kristen, Nicholas, Madison and Emily; and by six great grandchildren - Brody, Brooklynn, Mark, Calvin, Madi and Veda.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 32 years, Darlene; his parents John and Martha; and his brothers, Claire and Vern.

A funeral will be at 10:00 am, Monday August 13, 2018 at First English Lutheran Church, Dorset MN. The pastor, Rev. C.B. Davis will officiate. A reception will be hosted following the services. A private interment will be at Echo City Cemetery, Echo MN, where Cal will be interred next to his beloved wife. Friends may leave online condolences at CeaseFuneralHome.com.
