The Park Rapids Area Community Band, under the direction of Adam Tervola- Hultberg, will open the 2018 Sounds of Spirit Lake concert series at 7 p.m. Friday, June 29.

The concert will showcase Minnesota composers and some audience sing along features.

Joining the band that evening will be some members of the Menahga High School Concert Band. Their director, Beth Hahn, plays bass clarinet with the Park Rapids Area Community Band.

The concert will be outdoors, on the shores of Spirit Lake near the fishing pier. Refreshments are available on site, provided by the United Methodist Church of Menahga. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy live music while overlooking beautiful Spirit Lake.

In case of rain, the concert will be held in the gymnasium of the Menahga School on Hwy 71, one block east of the lakefront site.

All Sounds of Spirit Lake concerts are free and open to the public. They all take place at 7 p.m. Other concerts this summer are as follows:

• July 13 — Pat and Donna Surface & The Boundary Waters Boys. They are Grammy award-winning musicians. July 20- Monroe Crossing, with bluegrass at its best.

• July 27 — Saddle Sores, a great classic country band. Aug. 3 — Dennis Warner & the D's, a nationally touring folk music band.

• Aug. 10 — Peter Harper & Midwest Kind, an internationally touring Australian blues singer.

This activity is made possible, in part, by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
