NLOC, Hubbard County DAC win arts grants

The Northern Lights Opera Company, Hubbard County Developmental Achievement Center and Laporte School were among the recipients of Region 2 Arts Council grants for fall arts access and arts learning programs.

Local arts programs are among the awardees of recent grants from the Region 2 Arts Council.

A total of $54,621 in Fall Arts Access Grants was awarded, according to the R2AC’s Dec. 18 newsletter.

The Northern Light Opera Company (NLOC) is the recipient of two of the grants, including $6,000 to fund the second season of a seven-day Workbench New Play Workshop led by a duo of professional playwrights, and another $6,000 to help produce the company’s 21st Summer Music Theater production.

The Hubbard County Developmental Achievement Center was awarded $4,110 to join with Gallery North to offer free art classes and video tutorials to supplement DAC clients’ art lessons.

Other recipients of Fall Arts Access Grants were the city of Mahnomen, Headwaters Music and Arts, Bemidji Community Theater, Paul Bunyan Playhouse, Northern Artist Association, Bagley Area Arts Collective and Bemidji Symphony Orchestra.


The R2AC also announced the recipients of Arts Learning Grants totaling $30,976. They included $6,000 to NLOC to provide a three-week children’s theater camp, to create an original play with music in collaboration with Pine Point School, and $5,532 to Laporte School to host an artist residency with musician Rosa Sutter, to help students in grades 3-5 build two musical instruments, a mouth bow and a dulcimer.

Other awardees of Arts Learning Grants were Bagley Area Arts Collective, Bemidji Community Theater, Headwaters Music and Arts and Bemidji Woodcarvers Club.
