A Longville woman died early Wednesday after her car missed a curve on a gravel roadway and plunged into Crooked Lake.

Amelia Wise, 35, had ties to the Akeley area, said Hubbard County Sheriff Frank Homer. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The partially submerged 1999 Pontiac Grand Am was discovered shortly before 6 a.m. by a passerby in the section of water commonly referred to as Middle Crooked Lake.

Homer said the roadway has been the scene of another fatal accident several years ago and is a dangerous area.

Hubbard County 2, where the accident occurred, runs north out of Nevis and turns to gravel just south of the Crooked lakes. The accident was 3½ miles north of Nevis.

Homer said the accident is under investigation as to its cause, and whether it was alcohol-related.

The body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to determine the manner of death.
