A woman from the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation has been charged with voluntary manslaughter for stabbing her boyfriend to death during a quarrel.

Rebecca Brown, 49, is accused of knifing Derek Longie, 36, in the chest "without malice," according to a federal indictment.

The indictment said Brown "knowingly and unlawfully" killed Longie in "a sudden quarrel and heat of passion" Jan. 27.

The incident occurred in a Fort Totten, N.D., home where Brown and Longie were staying with friends. The couple's relationship was described as "on-again-off-again" by the U.S. Attorney's office in North Dakota.

A warrant for Brown's arrest was issued Feb. 17. She is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Brown is set to appear in Grand Forks' federal court Monday. She faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

The charge of voluntary manslaughter implies that the crime is thought to be intentional, but not premeditated.

Phone messages left at the Minneapolis office of the FBI and the Fort Totten Police Department -- the two agencies that investigated Longie's death -- were not returned Thursday.
