Authorities in Otter Tail County are trying to find a good home for an infant dropped off at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.

Police Sgt. Terry Eldien says an unknown woman left the infant with a hospital employee Monday evening. The baby is believed to have been born sometime earlier that day.

The healthy baby was apparently left under Minnesota's safe haven law, which gives mothers the legal option of giving up unwanted newborns to someone who will care for them.

Law enforcement officers placed an emergency hold on the baby until Otter Tail County Human Services determines what to do with the child.

Capt. Steve Adams says it's the first such incident he has seen in 27 years with Fergus Falls police.
