By Sarah Smithssmith@parkrapidsenterprise.com As Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes is stalemated in his effort to obtain a second investigator, a weekend crime wave descended that could keep five investigators busy. The Hubbard County Board has twice put off his request for a second investigator on the premise the county hasn’t enough crime to justify the expense. Meanwhile, a weekend stabbing, five burglaries and other crimes kept law officers hopping Saturday. And a fish house was confiscated. Because the Hubbard County Attorney’s office was still sorting out the details, the complete picture was still unknown as of press time Tuesday. The Park Rapids Police Department was involved in some of the arrests but it was unclear if its sole investigator was working on any of the cases. Chief Terry Eilers had not returned a phone call by press time. Here is what is known: Officers investigating the case of a stolen fish house located it and a stolen vehicle on Dakota Shores Drive. In the process, officers found stolen property from five burglaries that were reported recently. An unrelated stabbing occurred in Park Rapids and a number of people were arrested for felony drug possession. The five arrested for drug possession all made initial appearances Monday in Hubbard County District Court. They are: Daneen Faye Hamphill, 50; Carolee Faye Vanduyn 37, Jerald Drewes, 61, Donovan Sigmundik, 25 and Jesse Lee Larson, 39. All were charged with felony drug possession and were arrested Saturday night. Larson is suspected in the burglaries and was arraigned on those charges, also Monday. “Vanduyn said she and Larson had been living in the fish house for a week or two,” the complaints stated. Judge Paul Rasmussen set bonds at $10,000 unconditional and $5,000 conditional for all but Sigmundik, who must post $100 cash. Because deputies and city officers were still sorting out the issues, it is unclear what the status of the burglaries and stabbing were by press time. One person was taken to CHI St. Joseph’s Health for treatment of the stab wounds. The stabbing occurred around 6:15 p.m. in town. A baseball bat and butcher knife were allegedly confiscated in that crime. The fish house was impounded and it is sitting in the county impound lot. It was unclear what crime it was related to. Sheriff Cory Aukes was out of town at a workshop.
