Walter Ernest Karkinen, 83, of Menahga died Friday, June 15, 2007 at his home.
He was born Sept. 15, 1923 to Michael and Selma (Luukkonen) Karkinen in Runeberg Township, near Menahga. He attended Dist. 55 country school. As a young man, he farmed with his dad and helped operate his father's steam-powered sawmill business. Later, he and his brother, William took over running the fam-ily farm. He also did custom hay baling and swathing for his neighbors.
In September 1986, he married Ilmi Alajoki.
He is survived by his wife; brother-in-law, Gordon Peterson of Menahga; three nieces, three nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Milja; and his brother, William.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service.
Funeral: 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Mena-hga Apostolic Lutheran Church with Rev. Elmer Yliniemi officiating. The organist will be Alma Im-pola.
Casketbearers: His neph-ews and great-nephews, Timothy, Andrew, Alex, Ste-ven and James Pederson and Kyle Petterson.
Interment: Alajoki Ceme-tery near Menahga.
