Virgil Cummins, 76, of Pelican Rapids, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.
He was born July 25, 1932 to Melvin and Leona (Foner) Cummins near Glenwood. He attended school in Sedan and worked on the family farm during his youth.
He married Elsie Bowen on Jan. 20, 1951 in Glenwood. They moved to Benson, where he delivered milk for a short time. He worked in produce and later became produce manager at C&H Merchantile (Custer & Hornbacher). In 1956, they moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area, where he worked at Northport Super Valu (later known as Hornbacher's) as produce manager. He won several awards for his displays.
From 1968-80, they owned and operated Lake Eunice Resort, near Audubon. During these years, he continued to work for Hornbacher's. In 1980 they moved back to Fargo. In 1984, they moved to Dunvilla, near Pelican Rapids. He retired in 1994. His wife died Dec. 23, 1990. He continued to live in Dunvilla.
He was a member of the Benson and Fargo, N.D. Jaycees, Moorhead Rod and Gun Club, Cormorant Lakes Sports Club and Zion Lutheran Church.

He is survived by five children: Patti (Jerry Kalvik) Cummins, of Detroit Lakes; Joyce (Craig) Grahn, Pelican Rapids; Robin (Steven) Busch, of Lake Park; Mike, of Fargo, N.D.; and Pamela (Tom) Olson, of Pelican Rapids; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six sisters: Elaine Schwendemann, Dorothy Vollan, Gloria (Donald) Town, Violet Razink, Margie (Dan) Hoff and Bonnie Federation; and a brother, John (Carol).
He was preceded in death by his wife.
Memorial service: Monday, Dec. 22 at Zion Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, with Pastor Dale Pepelnjak and Intern Pastor Jacob Anderson as officiants.
Casket bearers: Bill and Jim Bowen, Mel Cummins, Mark Federation, Lonnie Myron and Steve Razink.
Honorary casket bearers: His grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Interment: Zion Lutheran Cemetery (at a date to be determined in the spring).
