Several crashes, one of which caused a male passenger to be airlifted to an unknown hospital, occurred on icy highways in Hubbard County early Wednesday morning. One crash, on Highway 71 south of Park Rapids seemed to be the most serious. It occurred at 6:30 a.m., along with a less serious crash on the same highway. A head-on crash east of Akeley around 8 a.m. sent both drivers by ambulance to the Park Rapids hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
Firefighters were called in to reroute traffic while law enforcement, First Responders and ambulances dashed to the scene. A chopper landed at the Park Rapids Municipal Airport. It was unclear if more than the one male passenger was airlifted. Emergency crews responded to "quite a few crashes," according to a Hubbard County dispatcher. Road crews were busy sanding and salting roadways slickened by a couple inches of new snowfall Wednesday.
