Two killed in head-on crash near DL

Two people died Wednesday after a cement truck and a 2005 Toyota Camry collided head-on on U.S. Highway 59 south of here, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Two people died Wednesday after a cement truck and a 2005 Toyota Camry collided head-on on U.S. Highway 59 south of here, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The crash occurred about nine miles south of Detroit Lakes about noon near mile marker 255. Road conditions were dry at the time.

The State Patrol stated in a news release that two people in the Toyota died at the scene but did not release their names, ages or where they lived. Their names are expected to be released today.

The driver of the cement truck was identified as Milton R. Beitz of Frazee, Minn. His injuries were not life-threatening.

It's unknown how the crash occurred. The Becker County Sheriff's Department referred inquiries to the State Patrol.

A State Patrol spokesman could not be reached for more comment on Wednesday.

In addition to the State Patrol, officers from the Detroit Lakes Police Department, Becker County Sheriff's Department and Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department, as well as firefighters and other emergency responders, were at the scene.
