Two 9th Dist. judicial races are contested

Hubbard County's Judge Robert Tiffany is running unopposed. Two Cass County judges, however, face challengers in this year's election.

Two judges’ seats are being contested in 2020 judicial races for Minnesota’s 9th District, of which Hubbard County is a part.

The 9th District serves the counties of Aitkin, Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Kittson, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau.

Twelve of the district’s 24 judge seats are up for election this fall, and an incumbent is running in each race. Both contested races are in Cass County.

In Hubbard County, the only judicial candidate who filed is incumbent Robert D. Tiffany.

According to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Candidate Filings webpage, the nonpartisan candidates who have filed for 9th District judicial races are as follows:

  • Court 2 (Crow Wing): Matthew Mallie (incumbent)

  • Court 4 (Cass): Charles D. Halverson (incumbent), Benjamin T. Lindstrom

  • Court 5 (Itasca): D. Korey Wahwassuck (incumbent)

  • Court 6 (Koochiching): Charles H. “Chad” LeDuc (incumbent)

  • Court 11 (Mahnomen): Anne M. Rasmusson (incumbent)

  • Court 12 (Itasca): Sarah L. McBroom (incumbent)

  • Court 14 (Hubbard): Robert D. Tiffany (incumbent)

  • Court 15 (Polk): Tamara L. Yon (incumbent as well as chief judge)

  • Court 18 (Polk): Jeffrey S. Remick (incumbent)

  • Court 19 (Cass): Jana M. Austad (incumbent and assistant chief judge), James Hughes

  • Court 21 (Crow Wing): Patricia Alander Aanes (incumbent)

  • Court 22 (Mahnomen): Darlene Rivera Spalla (incumbent).

According to Kyle Christopherson, a communications specialist with the State Court Administrator’s Office, Tiffany and Clearwater County Judge Eric Schieferdecker split the judicial work 50/50 between the two counties. Schieferdecker’s seat is not up for election this year.
