Dickinson native Jamie Kuntz, who made national headlines in 2012 when he was kicked off the North Dakota State College of Science football team after his coach learned he was gay, was the subject of numerous online gossip and entertainment news stories Monday after the website TMZ obtained court documents stating billionaire media mogul David Geffen had taken out a restraining order against Kuntz. According to the New York Daily News, the 20-year-old Kuntz is due in Los Angeles court Wednesday on a felony stalking charge after being arrested in October for allegedly following, harassing and making a “credible threat” against the 71-year-old Geffen earlier this year. He also faces a similar misdemeanor charge, according to TMZ. Kuntz’s lawyer told TMZ that Kuntz and Geffen had been involved in a physical relationship. He told TMZ that Kuntz did not stalk Geffen. Kuntz, a former all-West Region linebacker and graduate of Dickinson High School, was kicked off the NDSCS football team in 2012 for allegedly lying to his coach about having a 65-year-old man -- who was then Kuntz’s boyfriend -- in the press box with him during a football game the team was playing in Colorado. Kuntz was filming the game for the team, which was when he and his then-boyfriend were seen kissing. Their conversation was recorded on the game film. Kuntz had initially told his football coach the man was his grandfather, but later told him the truth. He was subsequently kicked off the team. “If I would have come clean initially, I would have been kicked off either way. I don’t see it any different,” Kuntz told The Dickinson Press in September 2012. NDSCS officials stood by the school’s claim that Kuntz was removed from the team for lying to his coach, not because he is gay. Geffen is openly gay and is considered one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. He started Asylum Records, Geffen Records, DGC Records and is one of the founders of DreamWorks SKG. He is also known for his philanthropy, particularly for medical research and the arts. Calls to Kuntz’s cellphone were not immediately returned.
