Joe Morgan didn't have an answer on how to stop Adam Thielen Friday night.

The Detroit Lakes senior guard scored 27 points, including 22 in the first half, in leading the Lakers to a 71-50 Mid-State Conference win over the Park Rapids boys basketball team at the Area High School gym.

Tom Juberian's 3-pointer gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead with 17:13 to play in the first half. Thielen then scored 10 points during a 12-0 run that gave Detroit Lakes a 14-3 lead at the 13:44 mark.

A layup off a steal by Juberian ended that run, but Thielen scored on a layup and hit two 3-pointers to push the Lakers' lead to 22-5 with 9:35 to play.

A 3-pointer by Kevin Vaadeland and two free throws by Grant Dierkhis-ing cut the deficit to 22-10 at the 8:06 mark. Another jumper by Thielen and two layups by Chris Gilson gave the Lakers a 30-12 advantage with 5:34 to go before a jumper by Juberian and two layups by Dylan Sievers made it 30-18 at the 4:33 mark.

Detroit Lakes then made six free throws down the stretch to carry a 38-21 lead into the second half.

The Lakers capitalized on Park Rapids fouls in the second half, making 17 of 21 free throws, to maintain the big lead. Andrew Larson's four jumpers, three baskets by Vaadeland, and a jumper and 3-pointer by Dierkhising accounted for the majority of the Panthers' 29 points after the break.

Juberian's 12 points, Vaadeland's 11 points, Cody Boterman's seven rebounds and Larson's three assists led the Panthers, who fell to 0-3 in the conference and 5-5 overall.

Gilson added 11 points for the Lakers, who improved to 1-4 in conference play and 3-10 overall.

Park Rapids traveled to Pequot Lakes for another conference game Tuesday night and will host Pillager Friday night.
