Temperatures fell into the 40s below zero in parts of the Northland on Thursday morning - the region's lowest temperatures of the winter so far, the National Weather Service reported.

Park Rapids reported a relatively balmy 27 below at 5 a.m. With dewpoint, that temp sunk to 33 below.

A spotter near Cotton reported 42 degrees below zero as of 6 a.m., with frequent cold spot Embarrass close behind at 41 below.

Winds were calm at most locations, so wind chills weren't much of a factor in the Northland. However, where there was wind - such as the Duluth airport as of 7 a.m. - wind chills were quickly falling into the 30s below zero. A wind chill advisory is in effect for the region until noon.

Highs today are forecast to climb into the single digits above zero.
