SUV crashing through Fargo apartment misses sleeping woman's bed by less than foot; building's weight rests on vehicle

A woman sustained minor injuries when a sport utility vehicle crashed into her apartment early today, coming to rest less than one foot from her bed, Fargo police said.

A woman sustained minor injuries when a sport utility vehicle crashed into her apartment early today, coming to rest less than one foot from her bed, Fargo police said.

The driver of the SUV, Frank Lyle Hopkins, 23, of Fargo, was arrested on suspicion of reckless endangerment and driving under the influence and booked into the Cass County Jail. He was not injured, according to a news release from Sgt. Mike Bernier.

Officers were dispatched at 2:14 a.m. to the apartment building at 3301 17th St. S.

The SUV was westbound on 33rd Avenue South when it failed to follow a curve that becomes 17th Street South.

About three-fourths of the SUV crashed through the garden-level apartment, causing severe damage to the building and vehicle.

The woman sustained minor cuts caused by flying glass, Sheetrock and other debris. She was treated by F-M Ambulance paramedics and released.

The weight of the building was resting on the SUV, and firefighters had to shore up the building and cut the top off the SUV to remove the vehicle with a tow truck, according to Fargo Fire Department Capt. Mike Binder.

The crash remains under investigation.
