Stephen Moore Cooper, 89, of Sarasota, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008 in Sarasota.

He was born Nov. 25, 1918. He graduated from Maxwell High School in Maxwell, Iowa and the University of Iowa.

He operated S.E. Cooper & Sons, a family furniture store and funeral home business, with his father, and later with his son. He also served as president of Maxwell State Bank and Chairman of Story County Hospital Board. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was an active member of Maxwell Presbyterian Church, the Lions Club and the American Legion.

He was a member of the Headwaters Country Club in Park Rapids, where he spent his summers on Long Lake.

He was married to Harriet Ellen McKay, who he met in Park Rapids at the lake, for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a son, Stephen Eric, of Park Rapids; a daughter, Susan Cooper Jones of Saint Augustine, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial service: Monday, Nov. 3. at Palms-Robarts Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Sarasota.
