An Owatonna man died in a snowmobile accident Saturday near the south entrance of Itasca State Park.

According to Hubbard County Sheriff Gary Mills, at approximately 3:40 p.m. the sheriff's office received a cell phone 911 call from a male snowmobiler reporting that his friend had hit a tree with a snowmobile on a trail near the park's south entrance, about 20 miles north of Park Rapids.

Responders found Thomas Lee Federly, 51, of Owatonna dead at the scene.

He had been riding his 2002 Polaris snowmobile northbound on Trail 39 in Itasca State Park, attempted to round a corner and struck a tree. Authorities believe an icy trail may have been a factor in the crash.

An autopsy will be performed. The incident remains under investigation.
