By Anna Ericksonaerickson@parkrapidsenterprise.com Rocky the Blind Rooster has been winning the hearts of many around the Lake George area. He and his owner, Flo Kahlstorf, made an appearance at Woodland Store in Lake George Saturday evening. The store had a holiday open house with cookies, hot drinks and photos with Santa and Rocky. Children in particular are drawn to Rocky, who loves to have his neck scratched and to be fed. Flo always had a dream of living on a hobby farm. She and her husband Vern eventually made that dream a reality and found property near Lake George. To make the hobby farm complete, Flo needed some farm animals. A nearby farmer brought some chickens to the Kahlstorf’s and that’s when the story of Rocky the rooster began. Flo didn’t know the intricacies of raising chickens and that the roosters might fight to see who will be number one. A fight ensued and one of the roosters took a claw to his eyes. But he didn’t give up and continued to fight. Flo swooped up the golden rooster and declared the fight finished. She took care of the golden rooster’s wounds but realized he would no longer see. Flo has written a book about Rocky and his adventures. He was named after the inspirational movie.
“He has really just become quite the character,” Flo said. “He even has a little girlfriend.” Although he can’t see, he enjoys going on walks. Flo uses a dog leash so she can help him around. The books are being sold at the Woodland Store in Lake George and by contacting Flo directly at 763-221-8010 or flo2014b@paulbunyan.net. The book is full color and tells the true story of Rocky, although embellished slightly, Flo said. She is selling the book as a fundraiser to help purchase a new chicken coop. Her grandchildren have fallen in love with Rocky and one of her grandsons even drew a page in the book. Rocky made an appearance at the Lake George Blueberry Festival last summer and Flo will likely continue to bring him to events. Look for him in 2015.By Anna Ericksonaerickson@parkrapidsenterprise.comRocky the Blind Rooster has been winning the hearts of many around the Lake George area.He and his owner, Flo Kahlstorf, made an appearance at Woodland Store in Lake George Saturday evening.
