A Grand Forks man was killed when he was thrown from his vehicle Friday afternoon on Interstate 29 about 15 miles north of Fargo.

Patrick E. Welsh, 24, died in the crash. His 19-year-old female passenger, Kelly Keomany, from Warroad, Minn., was taken by ambulance to Merit-Care hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol said that about 2:11 p.m., the 2009 Toyota Scion drifted out of the northbound passing lane and hit the rumble strips on the median side. The vehicle then slid across the roadway and entered the east ditch.

An eyewitness said the vehicle rolled several times. Welsh was not belted and was ejected from the car during the rollover. Keomany was belted and remained inside the car during the rollover. Welsh was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.
