Before filings closed Tuesday, there were races for most local elected offices and a primary election in one commissioner district and in the Park Rapids School District.

The following names were reported before the Enterprise deadline Tuesday morning. Filings closed Tuesday afternoon.

In Hubbard County, those whose four-year terms are expiring are sheriff, attorney, coroner and commissioners from Dists. 1, 3 and 5.

Sheriff Gary Mills filed earlier.

Bemidji attorney Darrell Carter filed for county attorney as did public defender Don Dearstyne. Incumbent county attorney Greg Larson hadn't filed yet, but assuming he will, there also would be primary race for the office.

Because of a change in state law, Dr. Paul Grimes is no longer eligible to serve as coroner. If no one files, county commissioners can appoint one.

Three residents have filed for Dist. 1 commissioner, including incumbent Floyd Frank. Also filing were Don Anderson and Sally Shearer, assuring a primary election Sept. 12.

Don "Doc" Carlson has filed against incumbent Swede Nelson, who filed earlier.

Cal Johannsen's term also is up for re-election this fall. Johannsen filed earlier.

Commissioners are elected by district. The Dist. 1 commissioner (Nelson) represents Henrietta, Lake Emma and Nevis townships and the city of Nevis. The Dist. 3 commissioner (Frank) represents Badoura, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Straight River and White Oak townships, Section 36 of Todd Township and the area of Park Rapids east of Highway 71. The Dist. 5 commissioner (Johannsen) represents Clay, Clover, Farden, Fern, Helga, Lake Alice, Lake George, Lake Hattie, Rockwood and Schoolcraft townships.

School boards

Three terms are expiring on the Park Rapids School Board. When the seventh person filed late Monday, a new state law forced a primary election among the candidates, who are elected district wide.

In addition to incumbents Helen Dickson, Dennis Dodge and Dianna Dotson, those filing so far are Stephanie Carlson, Dave Keller, who served on the school board 10 years, from 1991-2002, David Otterness and Karol (Kivi) Savage.

At Laporte, voters will fill a vacancy created on the death of Steve Kampfer and two other school board members whose terms are ending. They are now held by Paula Hoffman and Bryan Edwards.

As of Monday, those who had filed were Cynthia Doke, Jari Hanson, David Patterson and George M. Taylor Jr.

SWCD positions

Hubbard County SWCD supervisors file by district but are elected at-large.

Terms are expiring for two Hubbard County SWCD districts as follows: Dist. 4 includes the townships of Todd, Straight River and the portions of Henrietta and Hubbard from CSAH 11 and west; Dist. 5 includes the townships of Henrietta and Hubbard from CSAH 11 and east, Nevis, White Oak, Crow Wing and Badoura.

Currently, Kelly Condiff represents Dist. 4 and Doug Ralston represents Dist. 5. Ralston filed for reelection earlier. Donald Sells has filed for Dist. 4.

Supervisors from these districts will be elected for a four-year term.
