The BP gas station on the corner of Main and Highway 34 in Park Rapids was robbed at gunpoint Friday night just before closing, the suspect leaving “with a considerable amount of cash,” according to Police Chief Terry Eilers. A Cass County K-9 tracked the suspect from an alley on North Main east toward the Fish Hook River bridge, when the dog lost the scent, Eilers reports. The suspect, who was wearing a mask and carrying a large-caliber handgun at the time of the robbery, was believed to have been continuing east on the Heartland Trail. Eilers is asking residents to be on the lookout for the cash tray. Anyone who finds an abandoned register tray should not touch it, but call the police department at 237-2711. The incident, which occurred at 7:55 p.m., is under investigation with a video and evidence being analyzed and people interviewed Monday. The department is working on several leads, he said. Eilers emphasized the public is not at risk.
