Park Rapids girls win title at Bagley, listed in state poll

Another first-place finish earned the Park Rapids girls cross country team more respect from the state coaches.

Lydia Lutz, Victoria Lutz, Sophie Shogren, Tiffany Deitchler and Kayla Stursa all finished in the top 10 spots in leading the Pan-thers to the team title at Tuesday's Bagley/Fosston Invitational at Bagley. Park Rapids compiled 21 points to easily defeat runner-up Bemidji's 65 points for the top spot in this 14-team meet.

The Panthers, who also finished first at the Wadena-Deer Creek Invitational, are rated No. 5 in this week's state Class A poll.

Lydia Lutz led the field with a winning time of 16 minutes 14 seconds over the 4,000-meter course. Victoria Lutz (third in 16:40), Shogren (fourth in 16:42), Deitchler (fifth in 16:43) and Stursa (ninth in 17:09) were close behind as the Panthers ran away from the field. Chelsea Johnson finished 33rd in 18:36.

United North Central, led by Kathryn Houle's 11th-place time of 17:14, finished sixth with 145 points.

Park Rapids fielded an incomplete team in the 13-team boys race. Derek Werner (29th in 19:25), Isaac Zoller (30th in 19:31), Bryce Klasen (43rd in 19:52) and Kyle McBrady (76th in 23:55) competed for the Panthers.

Bemidji won the team title with 25 points while Warroad was second with 43 points. United North Central finished eighth with 181 points.

Warroad's Moses Hepp-ner clocked a 16:17 to win the 5,000-meter race. Alex White (27th in 19:21), Matt Skoog (33rd in 19:34) and Don Hanninen (38th in 19:43) led the way for United North Central.

Park Rapids' Jason Dennis finished 32nd in the junior high boys race with a time of 14:00.

The Panthers will compete in the Fergus Falls Invitational Thursday while UNC runs in the McGregor Invitational Thursday.
