Thompson hopes to collect "as much as possible" over the weekend.

The 17-year-old said the top five needs of the food shelf are canned fish, meat or chicken; apple juice; whole grain cereal; salad dressing and cash. He met with Bob Hansen, director of the food shelf, to get approval for the project.

Thompson will be accepting donations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday through Sunday, Oct. 20-22.
