Vitalant, formerly United Blood Services is the sole provider of blood and blood products to patients including preemies, surgery patients, accident victims and those battling cancer in almost 70 area hospitals, including CHI St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids.
To meet the daily patient needs, they have to see 250 volunteer blood donors every day. Up to 90 percent of us will need blood or know of someone that needs blood, but less than 10 people of the population donates blood.
The donation process is less than 10 minutes, but allow 45 minutes to one hour from the beginning of the health history physical to the refreshments at the end. With 1 pint of blood, (average adult has between 10-12 pints), you can help up to three local patients.
