Both the Park Rapids boys basketball team and the Park Rapids-Menahga boys hockey team opened holiday tournaments with wins Monday.

Dillon Theis scored a career-high 20 points, including the game-clinching layup with 14 seconds left, to give the Panthers a 58-55 win over Nevis in the semifinals of the Park Rapids Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament. Kevin Vaadeland added 16 points for the Panthers. Nolan Toft led Nevis with 36 points.

Park Rapids will play East Grand Forks tonight (Tuesday) at 7 in the championship game. Nevis plays International Falls in the third-place game at 5:15 at the Area High School gym.

Power-play goals by Kevin McMorrow, Tucker Coborn and Levi Erickson sparked the Park Rapids-Menahga boys hockey team to a 4-1 win over Eveleth-Gilbert in the first round of the Home of Hockey Holiday Showcase at Eveleth.

Park Rapids plays North Metro today (Tuesday) at 5 p.m. and plays Monticello Wednesday at 8 a.m.
