Panthers defend crown

Cory Hill says the Park Rapids girls track and field team is in good position to challenge for this Saturday's Section 8A title.

The Panthers put themselves in that situation by qualifying 19 individuals in 15 events en route to repeating as Subsection 8-29A champs Thursday at Pequot Lakes. Park Rapids tallied 175 points to easily finish ahead of Pequot Lakes' 158 while Nevis finished third with 93 points and qualified seven individuals in eight events. United North Central advanced six individuals in six events and finished fourth with 78.5 points.

In the boys meet, UNC took runner-up honors with 132.66 points, Park Rapids finished fifth with 68 points and Nevis was sixth with 35 points. Pequot Lakes led the field with 176 points. The War-riors qualified 11 individuals in 11 events, the Pan-thers qualified seven individuals in eight events and the Tigers advanced three individuals in three events for this Saturday's Section 8A meet at Ada.

Winning five events led the Park Rapids girls to the subsection title. The 4 x 800-meter relay team of Laura Haugland, Kyja Penning, Kayla Stursa and Victoria Lutz opened the meet with a winning time of 10:19.80. Haugland took first in the high jump by clearing 5 feet; Penning cleared 8 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault; and Lutz won the 800 run in 2:27.40. Lydia Lutz led the field in the 3,200 run with a 12:18.91 for the Panthers' other winning effort.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Leah Goetz, Sarah Guida, Tracey Peterson and Rach-el Thelen took second in 54.33 and Sarah Ament cleared 8 feet to take second in the pole vault.

Nevis won three relays and had five runner-up showings. The 4 x 100 relay team of Erin Walters, Jess-ica Schunk, Maggie Lin-dow and Micah Richards took first in 53.76; Annessa Feder, Stambaugh, Lindow and Schunk took first in 1:51.73 in the 4 x 200 relay; and Feder, Walters, Stambaugh and Sophie Shogren took first in the 4 x 400 relay in 4:20.49.

Adding runner-up showings for the Tigers were Gretta Hjelseth in the high jump (4-10), Schunk in the 100 (13.64), Stambaugh in the 800 (2:32.29), Shogren in the 1,600 (5:35.41) and Lindow in the long jump.

Ashley Vry won the discus with a throw of 101 feet to lead UNC. Evette Steinkraus took second in the shot put with a distance 32-1 and Kathryn Houle was second in the 3,200 run in 12:39.89.

Also qualifying for Park Rapids in individual events were Danielle Kent in the 300 hurdles; Molly Best in the shot put; Guida in the long jump and triple jump; Stursa in the 800; Thelen in the 100; Nicole Knott in the shot put; Penning in the 400; Shannon Taylor in the long jump; Wolff in the 300 hurdles, high jump and triple jump; Tiffany Deitchler in the 1,600 and 3,200; Chelsea Johnson in the 3,200; and Shannon Thelen in the 100 hurdles. Alyssa Klingenberg, Victoria Lutz, Penning and Wolff also advanced in the 4 x 400 relay.

Also advancing for the Tigers were Lindow in the 100, Feder in the 200 and high jump, and Kjera Gustafson in the discus.

Allison Meyer in the 400, Heather Goodwater in the 100 hurdles, Rebecca Salmen in the pole vault and Steinkraus in the discus also qualified for the Warriors.

Charlie Hrdlicka won two individual events and ran on one winning relay while Don Hanninen won the 110 hurdles in leading the Warriors in the boys meet.

Hrdlicka clocked an 11.42 in the 100 dash and a 23.32 in the 200 dash and joined Mike Hepola, Levi Tormanen and James Aho with a winning time of 46.41 in the 4 x 100 relay. Hanninen won the 110 hurdles with a 16.77.

The other section qualifiers for UNC were Tormanen in the 100, Jamie Kangas in the 100, Aho in the 200, Tom Gruchow in the 400, Dominic Simon in the 1,600, Billy Paulson in the 3,200, Hanninen in the high jump, Hepola in the long jump, Josh McDonald in the 110 hurdles and Ethan Thompson in the discus.

A runner-up showing by Nate Mack, Caleb Brown, Sean Hayes and David McAllister with a 1:38.30 in the 4 x 200 relay led the Panthers.

Also qualifying for Park Rapids were Cody Timmons in the 200, Nate Gebhard in the 1,600, Jake Grimes in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, and Brown and Mack in the pole vault. Mack, Brown, Hayes and McAllister also qualified in the 4 x 100 relay and 4 x 200 relay.

Bryon Schuldt's winning time of 10:30.36 in the 3,200 led Nevis. Casey Charmoli (in the 400) and Jon Gunkel (in the shot put) also qualified for the section meet for the Tigers.
