NYM eliminates Braves in subsection semifinals

Menahga was in position to advance to the Section 6A baseball tournament before New York Mills rallied for an 8-7 victory last Thursday.

The Braves, the No. 3 seed in the East half of the section, held a 7-2 lead in the third inning against No. 2-seeded New York Mills before the Eagles rallied.

This game was expected to go down to the wire after these teams split games during the regular season. New York Mills won the first game 6-5 while the Braves rallied for a 9-8 win in the regular-season finale.

Singles by Brandon Roiko and Andrew Skoog, an RBI single by Kyle Dormanen, an error and Andrew Pederson's RBI grounder gave Menahga a 3-0 lead in the first.

Roiko singled and stole second, Skoog lined an RBI single and stole second and Dormanen had an RBI single as the Braves led 5-1 in the second.

A double by Pederson and singles by Tyler Horton and Jake Sumner loaded the bases in the third. Walks to Alex Pederson and Roiko made it 7-2, but the Braves left the bases loaded.

New York Mills then rallied for the win by scoring twice in the third, three times in the fourth and once in the fifth.

Roiko, Skoog and Dorm-anen had two hits each to pace Menahga's 10-hit attack. Roiko started and allowed four runs on five hits and four walks over the first two innings. Dormanen took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. Skoog gave up one hit in 1 1/3 innings.

The loss ended Menah-ga's season at 13-9. Bertha-Hewitt, the No. 1 seed in the East, defeated NYM 5-4 for the subsection title. Both teams advanced to the Section 6A tournament.

Braves open with 11-2 win

A 12-hit attack and a combined three-hitter by Sum-ner, Andrew Pederson and Skoog led the Braves to an 11-2 win over Verndale in the playoff opener on May 30.

Verndale, the No. 6 seed, scored two unearned runs in the first before the Braves controlled the rest of the game.

In the bottom of the first inning, Skoog was hit by a pitch and scored on Dormanen's double and Andrew Pederson's RBI single.

Singles by Sumner and Tyler Ahlf started a two-run second inning. Sumner scored on a wild pitch and Ahlf scored on a double steal to give Menahga a 3-2 lead.

In the third, A single by Alex Pederson, a walk to Horton, an RBI grounder by Sumner, an RBI single by Ahlf and an RBI triple by Roiko made it 6-2.

A double by Andrew Pederson and an error led to another run in the fourth before an error and RBI singles by Adam Meech and Andrew Pederson pushed the lead to 9-2 in the fifth.

A walk to Sumner, a single by Roiko and a two-run double by Skoog ended the scoring in the sixth.

Andrew Pederson had three hits while Roiko and Ahlf had two hits apiece to lead Menahga's offense. Sumner picked up the win, allowing two unearned runs on two hits over the first 3 1/3 innings. Andrew Peder-son gave up one hit and struck out three over the next 2 2/3 innings while Skoog finished up.

In the other first-round games, NYM defeated No. 7 Nevis 31-1 and No. 4 Sebeka edged No. 5 Parkers Prairie 4-3.
