NCMA reopens with student art show

The North Country Museum of Arts (NCMA) holds a rare variety of art - ranging from a collection of Renaissance paintings dating from the 15th century to African and Native American creations to the recent work of student artists.

The North Country Museum of Arts (NCMA) holds a rare variety of art - ranging from a collection of Renaissance paintings dating from the 15th century to African and Native American creations to the recent work of student artists.

Located on 3rd and Court Ave. in Park Rapids, the NCMA is currently exhibiting the works of 128 students, representing 13 schools and 26 communities in northern Minnesota at the 27th annual High School Fine Arts Exhibit.

The show runs through May 20, when a closing reception and awards ceremony will be held for the young artists from 1 to 3 p.m.

Throughout the summer, an ever-changing exhibit of media and artists are featured at the century-old building, Hubbard County's former courthouse.

The Great Gallery holds paintings of Old Masters, capturing moments in time from centuries long ago. The Metz Nigerian Collection features sculptures, sacred objects, textiles and functional items from the Dark Continent.

A group exhibition by the White Birch Artists will debut June 5, concluding July 7 with a reception for the artists Friday, June 8 from 3 to 5 p.m.

The group, based in Park Rapids, works in a variety of media, including watercolors, oils, pastels and pencil. The members, with a range of experience and abilities, meet weekly to share ideas, knowledge and opinions, critiquing the work of their peers.

The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. A free will offering will be received as admission.
