Denise Pederson wants to get the word out about Multiple Sclerosis.

MS Awareness Week is March 8-14 and Pederson, who has MS, said she enjoys sharing information about MS with her helper dog Mac by her side.

"It's is a disease that affects the nervous system," she said. "It's frustrating at times but it's not the end of the world."

She has been instrumental in starting a monthly MS support group in Park Rapids and now about six people regularly attend.

Pederson was diagnosed with MS 20 years ago and now uses a wheelchair. She stays active, though, attending hockey games and other events in the area.

"I've got a lot to be grateful for," Pederson said.

During MS Awareness Week the National MS Society is asking everyone to "move it" by doing simple things throughout the week to help end the disease and spread the word about MS in their communities.

Another upcoming event is Walk MS, scheduled for May 2 at the Heartland Park Shelter. Walkers will raise pledges.

Pederson encourages people to get the word out about MS and hopes people will participate in the walk on May 2. To register for the walk, go to walkMSmn.org or call 800-582-5296.
