A mother rescued her 1-year-old child from a burning bed, and she and her four children escaped harm Monday night after their home in north Fargo caught fire.
The blaze at 1641 Broadway was reported just before 6 p.m.
The fire apparently started in a bedroom of the home, according to Assistant Fargo Fire Chief Larry Schuh.
He said seven people live in the house but only five were home at the time of the fire.
"Smoke detectors were working, and that's how she (the mother) was alerted to the fire in the bedroom," said Fire Capt. Robert Cuchna.

The mother, identified as Kandy Peterson, entered the bedroom and saw the bedding on fire with her 1-year-old on the bed, Schuh said. A 2-year-old also was in the room.
"She gathered up all the kids, got out of the house, called 911 and nobody got hurt," he said.
The bedroom had extensive fire damage, and there was heavy smoke damage on the entire first floor, Schuh said.
Damage was estimated at $57,600. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
The Salvation Army had a mobile shelter on scene, providing a place for family members and firefighters to warm up. The American Red Cross arranged temporary hotel accommodations, food and clothing for the family.
