Minnetonka man appears in court after Cass Lake boating death

BEMIDJI-A Minnetonka charged with criminal vehicular homicide after a fatal Fourth of July accident on Cass Lake appeared in Beltrami County District Court on Tuesday. Matthew Kinghorn, 46, was arrested Saturday after a boating accident on Cass Lake in which Brenda Larson, 50, Eden Prairie, was thrown from the boat and brought to shore unresponsive and not breathing. Kinghorn's wife, Jennifer, and his 4-year-old son were also on the boat. Kinghorn was driving the boat when he, Larson and Kinghorn's son fell out of the boat after hitting a wave. His son was the only person wearing a life jacket, authorities said. Jennifer Kinghorn was able to flag down nearby fishermen who were able to rescue Matthew Kinghorn and the 4-year-old, authorities said. After Matthew Kinghorn was rescued, he started his boat and went to pull Larson from the water, but when he got her into his boat, she had stopped breathing, according to an earlier release from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office. Larson was transported to Cass Lake Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Kinghorn was taken into custody on suspicion of boating while intoxicated and booked into the Beltrami County Jail; he was released on his own recognizance Tuesday. Kinghorn is charged with one count of criminal vehicular homicide operating a motor vehicle with alcohol concentration of .08 or more. Kinghorn faces 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 10.
