Rilee Michaelson is the January student of the month at Park Rapids Area High School. Her parents are Jennifer and Brian Michaelson.
Rilee has been involved in volleyball (2016-20), basketball (2016-20), softball (2016-20), National Honor Society (2018-20), student council (2018-20) and choir (2016-20).
After high school, she plans to attend Bemidji State University to play volleyball and major in secondary education.
Girls basketball coach Jeff Overmyer said, “It has been my pleasure to have coached Rilee for five years. Her ability to score, rebound and block shots is what most people see. What is not as obvious to most is what she does for the team behind the scenes. Rilee was chosen by her teammates to be a captain, and she absolutely leads by example. She works hard in practice. She encourages her teammates. She doesn't blame others when we lose. She gets after her teammates about making it to summer practices and games. She also talks to me about what coaching styles may or may not work for different players based on how she has seen them react in the past in other sports. In a nutshell, Rilee does whatever she can to make the team better. Rilee Michaelson is the epitome of a student athlete.”
Business teacher Angie Kuehn said, “I have only had the pleasure of having Rilee in class one time, but she is a good student. Where I have seen Rilee shine is on the volleyball and basketball courts and on the softball field. She was and is an integral part of those teams and will be missed. Congrats and good luck as you move on to the next level, Rilee!”

Choir director and prom adviser Leandra Craigmile said, “Rilee is a wonderful student. She brings life and energy into everything she does and works hard to accomplish her goals. I have been her choir teacher for two years, and Rilee is a leader in the alto section along with being the social media manager for our group. Rilee was also on the board of the prom committee and worked countless hours to create a great prom experience for everyone. I appreciate how detail oriented she is and how that drives her to create something excellent.”
English teacher Kerry Johnson said, “I enjoyed having Rilee in class. She's a diligent student-athlete who isn't afraid to put in the extra work. I appreciate her competitiveness and her work ethic. Congrats!”
Phy ed teacher Marion Goeden said, “Rilee is the total package. She excels in the classroom. She’s a captain for all three sports she participates in. She is involved in other school activities such as student council. Plus, she is involved at church. Rilee has gone on mission trips with her church youth group, helping in impoverished countries. What I appreciate about Rilee is how she makes everything she is involved in fun. She enjoys the people around her and is encouraging to her teammates. Rilee’s athletic ability has brought recruits to our contests, which is pretty fun. Rilee has a good sense of what she wants to achieve when she leaves Park Rapids. She has a bright future ahead of her.”
