"I'm not going to promise you a rose garden," Menahga Police Chief Scott Koennicke said. "It's not going to be painless but it shouldn't be painful."

He was referring to a new ordinance allowing ATVs and designated snowmobile routes in town, which the city council passed Monday night.

After hearing the public's thoughts on the issue, the council approved two designated routes.

The ATV route will allow out-of-towners to come up Highway 71 from the south, turn on 12th Street SE, on to Fern Avenue and around First Street SE to get back to the highway.

Snowmobiles will have a similar route except they'll be allowed across Spirit Lake and not allowed on Fern from 12th Street SE.

"If worse comes to worse, we can terminate it," Koennicke said. "It will eventually boil down to common sense."

Menahga business owners and one citizen who proposed allowing ATVs in town Dave Treinen agreed.

"I don't know how you can set this in stone until you get out there," he said.

Signs will eventually be up guiding riders.
