Melvin C. Myers
Melvin "Mel" Clifford Myers, 78, of Sebeka died Thursday, July 13, 2006 at his home from cancer.
He was born Oct. 16, 1927 to Howard and Ada (Hecht) Myers in Cylon, Saskatche-wan, Canada. As a young child the family moved to Stanton, ND, where he at-tended school. He served in the US Army Air Force as an Air Force Warning Squadron in the Aleutian Islands of the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He also served in the Korean War where he was wounded three times, sent to MASH units and then returned to fight on the front lines. He was honorably discharged in March 1953 and returned to Stanton to farm.
He married Edith Betty Schmidt Aug. 31, 1959 at the First Congregational Church in Billings, MT. They traveled across North Dakota while he worked as an auctioneer and later constructed missile sites. In 1963, they moved to the Twin Cities area and he worked as a welder and mechanic. In 1974, they moved to a farm northwest of Sebeka. From 1985 to 2003 he owned and operated a trucking business.
He was a member of the Guy L. McDermeit VFW Post 6206 of Menahga and Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post 212 in Park Rapids. On June 14, 2003 he was honored by receiving the Purple Heart for wounds he sustained while serving in Korea. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Roving Chapter 745 of Northwest Minnesota. He built a personal veterans memorial at his home to honor his fellow comrades.

He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Carol (Michael) Schneider of Miles City, MT, Carleen (David) Senn of Wadena, Cammie Peters of Sebeka and Charlotte Johnson-Myers of Shakopee; two sons, Virgil (Sheila) and Wade, both of Sebeka; son-in-law, Cal Johnson of Sebeka; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert; his par-ents, three sisters and four brothers.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Thursday, July 20 at United Methodist Church in Sebeka with Revs. Loren Ferch and Scott Warne officiating. The organist will be Jayne Koskiniemi. Congregational hymns will be "The Old Rugged Cross," "Rock of Ages" and "God Be With You Until We Meet Again." Pastor Ferch will sing "The Hymn of Promise."
Honorary casketbearers: Arden Ewert, Lou Lambert, Nancy Myers, Don Singlestad, Syd MacLean and the members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Active casketbearers: Roy and Jerry Myers, Brian Fischer, Marlin, Keith and Myron Meyers.
Interment: State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley.
Military honors will be conducted by the Guy L. McDermeit VFW Post of Menahga and the Sebeka American Legion Post. Taps and the Army Anthem will be played by Ray Vaadeland.
