Marie S. Hanke-Scarcello, 87, of Park Rapids, formerly of Des Moines and Ankeny, Iowa, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 at her home in Park Rapids.
She was born Aug. 19, 1921 in Fairmont to Corbett and Alida (Cassem) Cottrall. She spent her early childhood years in southern Minnesota until her parents moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Later her family moved to Idaho where they farmed and picked fruit in the mountains along Snake River. As a young woman she returned to Des Moines and worked at Younkers Department Store as an elevator operator.
In January 1944, she married Earl R. Hanke. They had four children. They lived in Des Moines. After her children were older, she worked as a proofreader for the Dial Finance Co. and the Deluxe Check Co. in Des Moines. Her husband died in May of 1975. She took over the family business as a territorial owner and operator of Dairy Queen franchises.
She married John P. Scarcello on Oct. 31, 1980. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church for many years. After she married John, she attended All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines.
She is survived by her children: Barbara (Gary) Riggs of Akeley, Steven (Sharon) of Park Rapids, Christopher of Nevis, and Ted (Corrine) of Cumming, Iowa; two sisters: Delores Tappe of Freeport, Ill., and Phyllis Elwell of Berwick, Iowa; a brother, Glen (Nova) Cottrall of Raytown, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl R. Hanke; her second husband, John Scarcello; a grandson, Solomon; and a granddaughter, Lynn Riggs.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov, 16 at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines and one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Funeral service: Thursday, Nov. 13 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids with Rev. Russ Paulson officiating. A second funeral service will be held at noon on Monday, Nov. 17 at Hamilton's Funeral Home near Highland Memory Gardens with Father Bob Harris officiating.
Casket bearers: Her grandchildren: Daniel and Steven Riggs, Laura Sartain, Steven Hanke II, Samantha Weiss, Stacy Martin and Suzanna Kieselbach and her nephew, Richard Elwell.
Honorary casket bearers: Her children: Barbara Riggs, Ted, Steve and Christopher Hanke, and her niece, Rene' Reynolds.
Interment: Next to her first husband, Earl, in Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.
