Moorhead police arrested a man on suspicion of felony assault Saturday night after witnesses said he kicked another man in the face multiple times.

The victim, Norman Cloud, 44, no permanent address, was taken by ambulance to MeritCare Hospital with significant facial injuries, including extensive cuts and bruises, Lt. Joel Scharf said.

Cloud was not listed as a patient at the hospital Sunday afternoon, a spokeswoman said.

According to police:

Officers responded at 9:44 p.m. Saturday to a report of a man assaulting another man near the intersection of Eighth Street and First Avenue North.

Cloud was found lying a block away on the sidewalk with considerable facial injuries. The suspect had fled on foot.

Police located the suspect near Third Street and First Avenue North.

Nathan Butcher, 30, no permanent address, was arrested and taken to the Clay County Jail. Police are recommending that he be charged with felony third-degree assault.

The incident remains under investigation.

Police have determined that Butcher and Cloud know each other, but they don't know what occurred between the men prior to the assault, Scharf said, adding that police have been unable to interview Cloud because of his injuries.
