The Park Rapids varsity speech team placed fifth out of 18 schools at their section contest April 16 in Fosston.
According to head speech coach Tanya Miller, six members of the team qualified for state competition, which will take place April 22-23 in Apple Valley.
The team had a section champion, Jack Worner, placing first in the extemporaneous reading category. Placing second were Maeve Bolton in creative expression, Kiergon Wilkins in discussion, Emma Ravnaas in drama, and Sophia Guida and Nolan Eckman in duo interpretation.
In addition, Evelyn Guajardo placed fourth in great speeches; Levi Trygstad, fifth in humor; Bianca DeRosa, sixth in poetry; and Mackenzie LaFerriere placed seventh in serious prose.
