Park Rapids FFA shows knowledge at Region II contest

The meats and soils teams placed second and fourth, respectively, and will advance to state competition.

On Sept. 21, the Park Rapids FFA attended the first set of Region II FFA contests at Long Prairie High School.

The Meats team placed second in the region and will be advancing to state in April at the University of Minnesota. The members participating included Bo Pike (6th Individual), Cesar Quixan Gutierrez and Levi Trygstad (2nd Individual). The members were tasked with identifying various cuts of meat and evaluating the quality of several cuts.

The Soils team received fourth place and will also be advancing to state. In the soils contest, students evaluate soils and determine the appropriate land use based on slope, texture, drainage, crop cover and other factors. Team members were Kaycee Tischer, Carver Laturnus and Bryant Tesch (7th Individual).

Park Rapids also had a strong showing in a very competitive General Livestock judging contest. Students judged classes of beef cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. Participants also give oral reasons to explain their placings to a judge. The Park Rapids team placed eighth overall. Team members were Makenzie Mack, Brooke Kritzeck, Avery Cederstrom, Kassidy Ennen, Shelby Billing-Kelly (9th Individual) and Kiza Nelmark.
