Participants in the ACTION Park Rapids meeting on Aug. 11 discussed the ongoing shortage of childcare providers and housing.
Mary Thompson with the Heartland Lakes Development Commission (HLDC) said they have grant money available to help child care providers with training and startup costs.
As discussion turned toward educating people about how to be good tenants, Thompson suggested a program called RentWise.
“The curriculum is already written,” she said. “It’s just a matter of an organization taking that up as something they’re passionate about.”
Thompson said HLDC is working on developing 20 acres next to the Hubbard County Housing and Redevelopment Authority’s (HRA) workforce housing apartments, and they just received word that they are receiving a USDA grant to do pre-development work there and owner-occupied rehab in Hubbard County.

Carolyn Pfeifer with the Hubbard County HRA said they provide housing assistance to 87 family units, ranging from homeless to low-income to workforce housing. She said funding for renters and homeowners in financial crisis is available through the end of August at mnhousing.gov.
