Will taxpayers

forget?

Last Friday's "Almanac" TV show featured politicians as well as regular folks. One featured guest was David Strom, representing the Taxpayers League. He calculated the "new" Democratic controlled Minnesota Legislature has already proposed $5 million in tax increases or new taxes. None of the Democrats on the panel disputed that figure.

Republicans say Democrats promised tax increases - the only question was when. An increase next year doesn't work as well politically because it may be too close to the 2008 elections. Raising taxes this year is risky, but taxpayers may forget about it by the time the next election rolls around.

Newspaper readers - especially fellow senior citizens - won't forget. I'll remind them periodically why the DFL cannot keep campaign promises without substantial tax increases. Democratic leadership claims those increases are "investments in Minnesota's future." If you believe that, I've got some ocean front property in Arizona for sale cheap.
