The Hubbard Bicycle Club again for the second year volunteered to monitor the bluebird houses on the Heartland Trail this past summer. Monitoring means someone checked the houses once each week during the nesting season. Last year the trail produced 91 fledged bluebirds but this year, with the cold spring, the number was down a little, which was consistent with the rest of Minnesota. With the reduced number in Minnesota, it reiterates how important it is for people to take proper care and provide proper nesting for these beautiful birds.

This year, Barb Mathison, Darrel Wilson, Polly Boogs, and Del and Beth Barsness are the club members who volunteered.

I have had a number of bicyclists tell me they have noticed many more bluebirds on the trail the last two years, so we very much appreciate the bicycle club for their dedication and commitment.

The Bluebird Recovery Program's mission statement is: "To encourage, inspire, educate and assist individuals and organizations to become actively involved in the restoration and preservation efforts to sustain a healthy and expanding population of bluebirds and other native cavity nesters."
