Our public education system is intended to provide equal opportunities to all no matter their race, religion or socioeconomic status. Yes, there are outstanding independent piano and music teachers in Park Rapids.
However, due to complications such as finances, work schedules and lack of transportation, some families do not or cannot use their services. I like the idea of giving those people the opportunity to experience and learn about music and the arts in school.
Yes, there are wonderful service groups and clubs in our community. They teach valuable lessons about responsibility and citizenship. They are a supplement to but not a replacement for school programs like speech, drama and National Honor Society. There are no substitutions for those things on a college application.
I am choosing to look beyond my own children and what is available to them and support educational opportunities for all.
