River trip left
an impression
We would like to thank everyone who volunteered and worked so hard to make our recent canoe trip on the Mississippi River a great success (it was described in the Park Rapids Enterprise on June 8).
Sen. Mary Olson of Bemidji conceived the whole thing and invited us up for the trip, so naturally she must get the lion's share of the credit. Rep. Brita Sailer of Park Rapids was a great help too. But a ton of other nice people helped out and this was especially important when bad weather hit.
Thanks to the Mississippi Headwaters Protection Alliance, the Friends of Itasca State Park; Paul Wannarka, Itasca State Park manager; Harvey Tjader of the DNR; and lots of other great folks including Barry Babcock, Jerry and Shirley Maertens, Michael Meuers, Patricia Grimes, Lorraine Cecil and Patrick Welle. We apologize for all those people whose names we didn't get.

We're thankful for their help and hospitality, for welcoming us and helping us experience the great scenic wonders of northern Minnesota.
We learned so much talking with local resorters, outdoor groups, loggers, park and trail enthusiasts and others who have helped make the Headwaters area such an important part of our state. We plan to keep what we learned in mind when holding hearings down at the state Capitol.
